FAQ

Prior to deregulation, both electricity and natural gas were provided by local utilities or regional monopolies that controlled both the power generation and distribution channels for delivery. Over the last several years, however, a number of states changed the regulations in the energy industry in order to create an atmosphere of competition among energy providers and drive down prices for consumers. Simply, deregulation breaks up a company*s monopoly over energy by separating the supply of energy from the delivery of energy to the local utility company (LDC) and its consumers. This separation of supply and services allows for the creation of more competition and allows private companies to find cheaper energy sources than what your local utility company can provide.

Thanks to deregulation, you can choose who supplies your energy. When you enter into a contract with an ESCO to supply your energy, the ESCO then coordinates with your local utility company to deliver that energy to your business or home. The local utility company will continue to read the meter, for example, and maintain all service obligations.
